Jacob Burckhardt was an influential Swiss historian. His work has been called "the finest essay on the history of art ever written." He was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1818 to an upper-class family. He died in his native city in 1883. Burckhardt was trained as a physician and taught medicine at the University of Vienna throughout his adult life
He was also a historian, but he is best known for his writings on art and architecture.
